“Yeah, but there’s no place like America,” said my 91-year-old
grandmother, who stopped by my office earlier this week to visit. She
was commenting on my recent Asia trip and how much time I spend away
from home.
“I can understand why you’d say that at your age; you still remember
when America was a great place,” I replied. “But I don’t think I agree
with you, now. This place isn’t what it was even when I was a kid. When
you’re away, and you come back, you really see how the country’s
changing for the worse.”
“What do you mean?”
Let me tell you what I told my grandmother… I told her that George Orwell was right. He was just 30 years premature.
Liberty. It’s a simple idea, but it’s also the linchpin of a complex system of values and practices: justice, prosperity, responsibility, toleration, cooperation, and peace. Many people believe that liberty is the core political value of modern civilization itself, the one that gives substance and form to all the other values of social life. They’re called libertarians.
